This post is really a test to see if my new Scribefire Chrome extension works. 

I am one of the proponents of Sensible BC, a provincial referendum that will de-fund enforcement of simple possession of cannabis by adults.

On the radio now, CKNW 780 in Vancouver, and just wanted to fact check a couple things.

First, the host suggested that post-decrim in Alaska teen use doubled. I found no evidence of that. Instead teen use rose in Alaska and across the country (not because of legal change, but as part of a societal change) but ultimately post-decrim Alaskan teen use leveled out at a rate less than the rest of the Lower 48.

Callers have been very supportive of the proposed reform. One police officer called in to voice his support.

One jokester called in to suggest that cannabis today is laced and Sensible BC’s proposal would somehow contribute to social decay. Absurd. And this position, and others like it, totally presupposes that prohibition is somehow preventing teens from accessing cannabis. But it doesn’t. Cannabis is actually easier for teens to get than alcohol – now – under criminal prohibition.

Bottom line is this: anyone that wants cannabis can buy it now. Prohibition doesn’t stop use. It doesn’t stop growing or sales either. Ending the waste of time and money that comes with busting adults for simple possession will not cause the sky to fall or things to get any worse. It will save taxpayer money and police time.
